Brink was 14 when she fell pregnant then dropped out of high the school. To support her family, Brink was able to move in with her son Davion following the birth of her son. In 1995, Brink was a part of her band Pulse that was formed within Albany New York. The group played predominantly local events that featured bands like Coal Chamber & Sevendust. But later the band split. Following the move to Los Angeles from California at the age of 25 Brink moved there in 2002. Brink was a singer and worked in bars and coffee shops while she searched for a band. A few years later, she was introduced to now-band members Chris Howorth at an audition. Howorth was hesitant to take her on since she was female. After he listened to her Howorth's performance, he changed his mind and apologized. With drummer Jeff Fabb they formed the band they called Dying Stars. Blake Bunzel, Josh Newell and Josh Bunzel were later included in the group.
